How To Teach English Online From Home or While you Travel The World

This is how I used to earn an income without having to actually “go to work.” Staying home with my family was really important to me.

There are many online English Teaching companies in the marketplace. If you’re from the USA you will have a lot more options than me. I am from Australia and I don’t have a degree so my options were limited.
But I found PalFish, an online company based in China, who hires non-degree teachers to teach new students wanting to learn or practice their spoken English.
One of the benefits about teaching on PalFish is being able to choose your own schedule and work from anywhere in the world, on your phone or tablet, using WiFi or cell data.
PalFish accepts 18+ applicants who are English speakers with a clear neutral accent who can provide ID such as, birth certificate or passport from the continents:

Who is PalFish?
Since PalFish was launched in 2015, it has produced a series of products, including PalFish English, PalFish Reading and PalFish Kid, which have accumulated over 10 million users. Among them, over 100 thousand are paying users. As the #2 in China (as at 2020) they are always improving their technology and training for teachers and students.
What is PalFish?
There are two types of teaching on PalFish: “FreeTalk” and “OKC (Official Kids Course)”
FreeTalk
FreeTalk is free from a set structure where you set your own rate and you can “start tutoring” whenever you like and for as long as you like.
Adults or kids may call you to talk via voice or video chat, about whatever they like.
I did quite a bit of FreeTalk when I first started on PalFish and I always had great experiences. Both Adults and children took pre-prepared Lessons with me or just rang for a chat to practice.

The Official Kids Course
The other option is The Official Kids Course (OKC). Firstly you’ll need to take the recorded DIY Demo Class interview. It’s a quick easy process for 15-25 minutes showcasing how you would teach a lesson.
There’s no worries because all the lessons have pre planned slides similar to a PowerPoint presentation with lots of pictures and words.
They even have a suggested script for you to read at the bottom of each page telling you what to say! So you just need to go through each slide demonstrating how you would teach a child.
Once you’ve passed the interview, parents can book their children to have lessons with you. The more good reviews you get and the more hours you do, the more regular students you’ll get.
Choose your referring teacher / inviter wisely
You may find many people or companies promoting PalFish who never actually worked for PalFish.
There are also people who are recommending PalFish who have only worked a couple of hours and are promoting their Referral codes.
Definitely confirm the person is up to date and experienced.

How Much Do You Get Paid?
For the PalFish Official Kids Course earn around USD$10-$12.5 per hour + incentives per hour
Your pay per class depends on the hours that you put in the month before. You can choose your own pay raise when you teach more classes! Pretty Cool!
As an experienced teacher on the platform, working for over 2 years, I have worked up to 7 mornings a week, and some weekend evenings.
I then reduced my hours to 4 mornings a week for about 4 hours each day.
As of July 2021, I am taking a break from teaching ESL Online and will no longer be teaching at PalFish.
How Do palfish pay You?
Updates: I have heard you can be paid via PayPal now.
As of 2021: You are paid once a month by the 7th of every month.
To get paid you’ll need to open a Payoneer account. This is an American company and is similar to PayPal.
I’ve been paid on time every month for every month for over the 2 years that I’ve been teaching with PalFish.

Students
Teaching English to children from ages 3-12 with a curriculum based on the Pearson Curriculum with fun already planned lessons including educational games and songs. All Official Kids Course classes are 25 minutes conducted as 1 to 1.

Approximate online figures as at the time of this writing: You can Google it: China’s 2019 population is 1.43 billion, based on United Nations projections. China has over 200 million elementary and high school students, who, together with pre-school children, account for one sixth of the total population. There are plenty of classes to go around!

Simple DIY
A lot of the APP functions are self serve, DIY, which is fantastic. You don’t have to wait to hear back if something can be done for you. You just do it yourself. Be prepared to be in control and you can do most things yourself. You will not be led by the hand all the time. Get familiar with the Official Handbook and FAQ’s for cancellation policies, payment and bookings etc.
Support
You are assigned an Official Kids Course Mentor and Admin once you pass your interview/mock class. PalFish has a fantastic teacher support community, within the app and on other social media locations.
Training
There are Official Kids Course training sessions from within the App hosted by the training Mentors.
There are occasional Zoom traning meetings.
When you pass your PalFish Official Kids Course Interview you are added to 2 main CHAT groups.

classes
~ Classes are 25 minute one-on-one with a teacher and student.
~ Peak times are Beijing time:
- 5:30pm – 9pm Monday – Sunday
- 9am – 9pm on Weekends
~ All the materials are already prepared. (If you’ve heard of FreeTalk, it is a totally different side of PalFish where you are “Free” to make your own material. Learn more about FreeTalk in my other videos)
~ You are certified for ALL classes after your initial training.
- Once you pass your mock class/interview you will complete 2 training classes before receiving any classes.
- After completing those 2 Training classes, similar to your Mock Class Interview, you will be assigned 2 probationary classes with students. You may receive feedback on how to improve.
- You are now ‘certified’ for ALL classes, trials and Official classes as well as any FreeTalk classes you choose to hold and prepare yourself.
What to expect
In the beginning you will get a LOT of trials, so check your calendar often and update your availability to show when you are NOT available.
These trials are for the student and parents to see if they like the Kids Course Program and would like to buy a package.
Trials afford you the opportunity of extra bonus’s after a student buys a course package. ALL trials are observed by the Sales Team. They are usually in contact with the parents during the class or immediately after the trial class is completed.
Your feedback helps the Sales Team communicate to the parents the best learning journey for their child and could land you with your first of many regular students.
This also allows the Sales Team and Class Admins, aka Head Teachers, to get acquainted with your teaching style so they can better match you with regular Official Kids Classes.
Look at trials as training, to get very well acquainted with the app and its features. Once you have a track record of proven reliability and high teaching standard you will start to Official Classes. (non-trials)
Students may have come from another Teacher to try a new teaching style.
Students are not ‘my students’ or ‘your students’ but rather PalFish students. They have the ability to choose different Teachers at any time. They may even have 2 regular teachers they see at different times each week.
It is a social online learning community.

STAGE 1: Set up Profile. ID verification. (You can start teaching FreeTalk classes NOW)
STAGE 2: Recorded Mock Class/ Demo interview. + Mini Quiz.
STAGE 3: 2 Lesson Preparation Training Classes.
Boot Camp Training for 2 weeks to assist in your learning
STAGE 4: Probationary 2 classes as unpaid training. You will receive written feedback from the PalFish Team after teaching 2 complete classes.
STAGE 5:
Start Teaching!
You are now an Official Kids Course Teacher! (aka OKC)
The whole process can take as little as 2 business days and you start teaching! Amazing!
